This warm-up draft allows your ideas to flow, but is distinct from the prewriting freewrite, because now you most likely honing in on or clarifying your overall main idea and main points. Don’t try to write in any specific manner, but perhaps aim to write simply, as if in a conversation, expressing your ideas as they naturally unfold. You might briefly stop to look over your progress or outline, your main idea, main points, mapping, or so forth. Don’t be afraid to add new ideas or subtract old. The next stage of writing—the revising stage—is the proper time to begin your critical thinking and crafting of your writing.

Second and More Drafts: Many experienced writers quickly draft not only once or twice, but several times—each draft helping with the shaping and development of the main idea, main points, and purpose of the work. You might write only 20 or 30 minutes on the first draft, then take a break or an overnight before reading the draft, and then come back. In the next stage of writing, the revising stage, you will decide what you like, what you want to keep or delete, and what needs work. But for now, while drafting, focus is on composing your thoughts and adding ideas and details.
