The quote above translates from kreyol as "if you run from rain, you'll fall in a river." It's a saying that I carry with my as I grow older.
I am a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I should be a senior, but I transferred last year ( the struggles of a transfer student and credits). am majoring in psychology and will soon be an Isenberg School of Management student where i will add on to my major with Marketing.
In the 5th grade, I had a two piece outfit that I imagined in my mind. It was just a skirt and a matching top, but I was in love with it and decided to draw it out in order to see it come to life. I had a friend who saw the picture one day and she complimented me telling me that it was really good. After that I started drawing a lot of clothing ideas that came to mind. This soon turned into me following brands and their runway shows, then their lookbooks. It became a hobby for me to try to pinpoint what the latest trends will be off the runway that are followed by the masses. By the time I was in the 8th grade I developed such a love for the art behind fashion but also the psychology and the marketing. As I've grown older my love for fashion has also mixed with my passion for my Haitian and African American cultures. Hence why my background picture is the two black women with afros and "Don't shoot" on their back. All of these things, my blackness, my love for fashion, my characteristics (my natural hair) play a role in who I identify myself in terms of what makes me who I am.
