Prof Emanuele Scafato, MD, MSc, is Director of the National Observatory on Alcohol (NOA) and of the WHO Collaborating Centre Research & Health Promotion on Alcohol and Alcohol-Related Health Problems, Senior Researcher at National Centre on Addictions and Doping at the Istituto Superiore di Sanità ( ISS, Nat. Inst. of Health), Rome, Italy, since 1934 the leading technical/scientific body of the MoH and currently of the National Health System. Gastroenterologist (20 years of clinical practice), epidemiologist (25 years of experience), former Director of the ISS Population’s Health and Health Determinants Unit , Nat. Centre for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion. Activities: research, assessment, prevention and training in Epidemiology and Public Health, formally appointed to provide the report and the data (by Law 125/2001) to be sent to the Parliament each year by the Minister of Health. The NOA is in charge, by decree of the Council of the Ministries, for the Italian monitoring system on alcohol SISMA as a part of the ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics) Statistical Program focused on alcohol consumption, evaluation and assessment of alcohol-related harm, assessment and analysis of population health status trends. Prof Scafato has been appointed since 1992 by the Italian government, as WHO National Counterpart of the Eur. Alcohol Action Plan, currently EU Commission Governmental representative in the CNAPA (Committee on National Alcohol Policy and Actions). Focal point and expert for the EAAP implementation, expert in several High Level Panel, Committees, Commissions, Working Groups on alcohol, ageing, cognitive impairment and health monitoring, he is appointed in several WHO HQ WGs such as ADE “Alcohol & Drug Epidemiology” and “Behavioural disorders associated with excessive use of the internet, computers, smartphones and electronic devices”. At the national level he is coordinator of the two main longitudinal cohort studies on ageing : ILSA (italian Longitudinal Study on Ageing) and IPREA (Italian Poject on Epidemiology of Alzheimer Diseases). Leader of the WP “Guidelines” in the EU JOINT ACTION RARHA (Reducing Alcohol Related Harm in Europe). Since 2007 ONA provides the training in medical education programme on early identification and brief intervention of harmful alcohol. Co-author of more than 500 scientific publications, President of the Italian Society of Alcohology, the key scientific society on alcohol since 1976, vice president of EUFAS, European Federation of the Societies on Addiction. Member of the executive board of APN, Alcohol Policy network in Europe, and member of INEBRIA. Since year 2000 Professor at Florence University , Faculty of Medicine.
