History Of Santa Clarita CA

Santa Clarita is the 24th largest city in California and the 4th largest city in the Los Angeles County. Presently, there are a couple of unincorporated areas the city has annexed which has led to the large increase in population of the area.

The history of Santa Clarita dates back as far as the AD 450 but the city was officially incorporated in December 1987.

Around AD 450, about 2000 Tataviam people came to the area to settle but not much of the history of the was documented until 1842 when Francisco Lopez made a documentary about the discovery of gold in California in the area of Placerita Canyon.

A businessman named Henry Newhall came to the area and made a lot of money from the Gold Rush in California by opening up his company called H.M. Newhall & Company, a successful auction house in San Francisco, and the area of Newhall was named after him.

After the Gold Rush, the area focused on the railroad and Henry Newhall invested a lot in some rail companies that connects San Francisco to some other cities. He became the president of the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad.

By 1870, Southern Pacific Railroad bought the company from Henry Newhall and his partners but he remained part of the board of directors. Years later after the railroad business, Henry Newhall went into real estate and ranching and bought a total of 143,000 acres of land from the old Spanish and Mexican land grants.

When he died, his heirs incorporated the Newhall Land and Farming Company, which contributed in the development of the communities that is now Santa Clarita.
