Schalk Marais started his professional career at BKS (Pty) Ltd in 2002. He also spent a year with Sutherland Associates in Cape Town. He rejoined BKS (Pty) Ltd in 2005. BKS (Pty) Ltd was integrated into AECOM in 2012. During his career he was involved in the structural design and detailing of reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, steel and masonry buildings, refurbishment, building assessments and site investigations of existing structures. His projects comprised industrial structures, medium to high-rise office buildings, sports facilities, retail and medium to high-rise multi-use structures. In addition he is responsible for managing CAD operators, BIM modelers and technicians to compile layout drawings, details, reinforcing layouts and bending schedules; site inspections; internal quality control; and liaising with architects, contractors & other members of the design team. Schalk has the responsibility of delivering coordinated structural design to high professional standards ensuring that the Clients’ expectations are met. He is also acting as the Design Project Manager on various projects, working closely with the Client and other members of the Design Team. In 2012 he started Gallows Hill Brewing Company - a small craft brewery - in Cape Town with his brother. The brewery is still a work in progress handled by him, his brother Christoff and their wives.
