Senior Citizens Law Program
The Senior Citizens Law Program (the “Program”) provides legal services, without charge, to Suffolk County residents 60 years or older. Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the New York State Office for the Aging through the Suffolk County Office for Aging.
Our offices are located within the Clinic Office on the 1st floor at Touro Law Center. The program is staffed by a Senior Attorney, a Staff Attorney and a Paralegal. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Senior Citizens Law Program provides legal advice and assistance in many areas of law including; prepearation of Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care Proxies and Living Wills, filling assistance with debt and loan issues, Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security Disability appeals, guidance in issues relating to senior housing, as well as subsidized and Section 8 housing and representation on certain Town Code violations. The program also serves as a liaison to ombudsman working in Suffolk County nursing homes and provides legal education programs to senior citizens and professionals in the community.
The Program began in January 2010, and has served thousands of Suffolk County residents within the last 4 years. The Program provides an opportunity for students to interact with clients, observe/partake in client interviews, prepare legal documents and correspondence, conduct research and attend court and administrative proceedings.
