As adolescence fades and maturity arises, we wonder how we can give back to our community that has made us the person we are today. I discovered my opportunity a couple years ago, or as I should say it discovered me. It was a cold, brisk morning and I was astonished to see an audacious cat on my doorstep. I was immediately prepared to take on the journey of gaining this cat’s trust. As winter was approaching, I was aware that stray cats rarely survived low temperatures, and especially kittens. As it turns out, she knew that too as the next day she had delivered me a surprise: a whole litter of kittens. Whether it was the power of responsibility she had given me or my undeniable love for animals, I was ready to volunteer as tribute for saving stray cats and kittens. As I grew older and more independent, I became connected to a fostering agency where I single handedly took care of up to six kittens at once, which included administering medicine, feeding them, comforting them, taking them to vet appointments, and to their adoption appointments. With this I gained enormous amounts of responsibility and felt fulfilled with my wish of giving back. This opportunity sparked a quality in myself that I had yet to discover. It has benefited my life enormously and reflects what is important to me. I learned to always help in ways you can, because you never know who is waiting for you or who might be needing you. Intervening positively on one’s life is the most rewarding feeling and I will always be grateful for what I have and what I can contribute.
