In 1995, shortly after I got married my wife announced that I was going to be a father. What a revelation; talk about growing up fast. I was 16K in school debt, didn't own a car, had no family for 3000 miles and was going to be a father in 7 months. A little voice in my head said, "time to grow up buddy".

So how do you go from working in a meat plant for JM Schneider's at 9.25hr to being a top grossing sales reps within 5 months for a company with 1.3B in sales and over 100 veteran sales people?

You Find Your Why: I just wanted my wife stay at home with our daughter Myra. I needed to go from earning 18k to 100K and she could quit her job. From 1997 to 2000 I had three more children; all boys. For a fledgling sales guy each child was a blessing from a goal setting perspective as my income increased over 1000% within a few short years.

Find Your Why and You Will Find Your How. Now, I wish I would have known about the secrets of success like digging your well before you need the water, setting goals, writing them down and so forth, however those topics were not on the university syllabus so I devoured every book, tape, and CD I could find that would help me define the 'How'.

With one cold call after the next I started failing my way to success. I went from earning 18K as a new father to earning well into 6 figures within 12 months. Wow - success is not an accident after all!

Failures Are The Wisest People Sometimes. I have to agree with that statement, as long as you don't make the same mistake twice. My sales journey has been more failures than successes, but those small victories have placed me in the top 1% within my industry. What a wonderful sales lesson. The Why is far more important than the How. Sales growth is a pattern : Fail, refine - Fail, refine.

Now with over 1 billion dollars of sales under my belt I feel like I am just getting started. With half my career behind me the passion, fire, tenacity, and desire to win are stronger today than ever.
