Sean Keem
Dr. Sean Keem, M.D., FAAOS, the spine surgeon who founded Keem Spine Institute, P.C., in metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia, offers a vast array of spine surgical procedures, from minimally invasive surgeries to treat painful spine to correction of deformed spine such as scoliosis. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Keem studied both genetic engineering and biology. He also spent two years working toward a more general engineering degree. Dr. Sean Keem went on to earn his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego and moved to New Jersey for his internship and residency at New Jersey Medical School.
After he completed his residency, Dr. Sean Keem took a yearlong fellowship in spine surgery, serving with several different doctors in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Keem then joined Orthopedic Surgery, P.C., in Atlanta, Georgia. Two years later, he started the Keem Spine Institute.
Dr. Sean Keem performs over 300 surgeries a year. He has completed more AxiaLIF spinal surgeries than any other surgeon in Georgia and more XLIF spinal surgeries than anyone else in metropolitan Atlanta. In an XLIF surgery, the patient lies on one side, allowing the doctor to approach the spine through a small incision in the patient’s other side. In the AxiaLIF procedure, the surgeon reaches the lower back by approaching the spine from a cut near the tailbone.
XLIF and AxiaLIF allow Dr. Keem to perform spinal fusions that minimize risk of damage to the delicate ligaments and muscles of the back. In addition, the procedures involve less blood loss and less time under anesthesia than traditional back surgeries. Patients who undergo a minimally invasive spinal surgery under Dr. Keem can expect to spend less time in the hospital and fewer days recovering than patients who opt for standard back surgeries.
Dr. Keem maintains affiliations with three Georgia hospitals: the Gwinnett Medical Centers in Duluth and Lawrenceville and the Emory Johns Creek Hospital in Johns Creek. Dr. Sean Keem is also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, and the Scoliosis Research Society, among numerous other medical professional organizations.
