Sebastien Penmellen Boret

Sébastien Penmellen Boret is an anthropologist and associate professor at Tohoku University. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from Oxford Brookes University and an M.Phil (research) in Science from the University of Oxford. His current research focuses on inclusive disaster studies, social inclusion and disability in relation to disasters in other countries. He investigates the disaster experiences of people with disabilities and other marginalised groups. Prior to this, Sébastien spent the past 20 years researching the management of the dead in post-disaster communities. This includes the handling of remains, the grief of bereaved families, and collective memory sites (‘Les lieux de mémoire’). He is the author of ‘Japanese Tree Burial: Ecology, Kinship, and the Culture of Death’ and co-editor of ‘Death in the Early Twenty-first Century: Authority, Innovation, and Mortuary Rites’.
