Growing up my family always seemed normal to me, however I would always pick up on the questioning expressions I would receive from my friends whenever I would describe it. My mom gave birth to me when she was forty and my dad was sixty. I was born an uncle to six and would later receive seven more nieces and nephews. By middle school, it became common practice for me to give the set monologue and answer the follow up questions. During my eighth grade parent student dance, my dad was initially denied because “no grandparents are allowed inside.”
I used to be really embarrassed of my family, as it made me already feel different then my peers. I was envious of hearing stories about my friends' home life and how they had siblings their age and not thirty years older. Yet, as I entered high school I began to appreciate the way I was raised more. I learned to appreciate my disorientating family tree framed on our wall, the packed holiday parties, and the immense amount of support and wisdom it gave me. When I was born, my dad already retired from being a CPA and always taught me his knowledge he has learned throughout his experience. He is my biggest inspiration for going into accounting myself. While it can still be a lot, I would never trade my family for anything, also It has given me the perfect icebreaker for life.
