I was having dinner a week ago with Jeff and Michelle--two of my first dog education clients, when I branched out on my own and started South Bay K-9 Academy in Southern California, back in 1994.

I have always thought it was funny that the one thing people appear to remember from my 3-24 page dog teaching book, 'Secrets of the Professional Dog Trainer'! is that I would recommend spitting in your dog's food.

Like this were the magic key to obtaining a well behaved dog.

Regardless, it appears to be the thing that almost everyone remembers--from literally hundreds of dog training ideas I present in the book, on our internet site Dogproblems.com, and within our forum.

Why do I recommend spitting in your dog's food?

As you are observing canine food along with your fragrance. And as the Alpha dog in the pack always eats first.

This is a subtle way to talk to your puppy that you are the pack leader. But this alone won't take action. You have to be acting like a pack leader in most other part of your dog's life, too. Such as being the first ever to walk-through a door. Or showing your puppy where to lay down, and when he is allowed to eat. And ensuring you follow through and apply any and every command that you give.

I have a lot of guff from people--especially other dog trainers--who misunderstand my advice and genuinely believe that spitting in your dog's food is the only thing you have to do tol make you the Alpha dog. It is perhaps not.

Well, no greater than the 10-0 other subtle things you need to do to communicate that you're the pack leader. This elegant
