In the fall of 2012, my parents and I immigrated to the United States. As a 12-year-old child, I didn’t have any idea how hard immigration would be, instead, I was seeing immigration as an opportunity to experience different cultures and make new friends. Our flight landed in Detroit, where my new journey started. After a couple of days, I realized that what I imagined about immigration was the opposite of reality. The cost of living and education became big concerns for us. Not being fluent in English made education harder for me. I used to be one of the top-ranked students and was part of the Mathematical Olympiad team at my former school, but with all these difficulties I was struggling with understanding what teachers were explaining at classes. I had hopes that I would be able to learn English, through that didn’t happen as quickly as I had wanted.
