September Chatfield
Volunteer, Mother, and Founder in Hartford, Connecticut
My life's work was revealed after an unfortunate event of gun violence that hit close to home in 2008. My son, Tyrek Marquez, whom was 7 years old at the time, was one of many victims struck by a bullet; he was shot in the head.
It's a miracle that he is alive today. I began my fight for gun control and anti-violence. I have been dedicated to community activism since 2013, as an Urban Outreach Coordinator for The Newtown Action Alliance (Sandy Hook), speaking out about gun violence prevention.
Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty recognizes my efforts stating that " [September's] contributions have made a tremendous impact on our nation and that her healing efforts have enriched communities and brought new opportunities for growth."
I have received community service awards and recognition, but that is not why I do what I do. In 2015, I organized the Victims of Violence Holiday Event, honoring families whom lost loved ones to violence in Hartford. The event provides basic need items for those families, Christmas presents andcommemoratesvictims' families as a show of support. There are also activities, performances, and a dinner.
