“Ewwww, your toenail fell off? No no don't show me!” I gasped as my cousin began peeling his sock away.

“It started off as just a bruise and now look, my nail is completely gone!” he exclaimed.

“Don't you dare Ronald. I swear if I see your nasty toenail I'm gone and I'm not coming back over here.”

“Well, you really don't have a choice now do you cuz. Your mama dropped you off so you're not leaving until your mama comes back to get you. We both know that's not gonna be anytime soon, especially if she went out with Ms. Suzie. It's gonna be a while”

And with that, he yanked the rest of his sock off and to my own horror, I saw the most disgusting toe I had ever seen in my entire life. It was crinkled and scabbed and looked like it was probably infected. The yellow puss that oozed from the center made me yelp and shelter my poor poor eyes.

“Ronald, you need to get that checked out! How could you let it get that bad! You're an idiot for letting it happen in the first place. You will never catch me with a missing toenail like you.”

Or so I thought.

On the fateful day of August 19th, 2017, three years later, I was walking home with my sister. My stupid water bottle tore a hole in the side pocket of my bookbag, so it continuously fell every five minutes. I decided to carry it the rest of the way.

As we approached the door, I asked Kiah “ Do you have your keys? Mine are deep down in my bookbag.”

“Uhm no.” she replied, “why would I bring my keys when I know you always bring yours.” Of course. What did I expect?

So I put my water bottle back in its slot and started to dig for the keys. After about three minutes I successfully found them, opened the door, and set my stuff down on the side of the table.

Before I could open my mouth to greet my parents, WHAM! A scream erupts from my belly instead.

My water bottle had fallen directly on my big toe. It burned and sizzled. The pain was so immense I wanted to cut my toe off altogether. As I took off my sock to see the damage something caught my eye. Tears started to stream down my face as a big black bruise stared back at me.

“My toenail is going to fall off” I whined.
