Retired government affairs lead for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the global nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. Founded in 1896, NFPA delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy. Managed NFPA's critical relationships with Congress, the Executive Branch, and major fire service and safety organizations. Helped lead fight to preserve copyrights that are essential to the independence of safety standards developers like NFPA.
Served from 2009 to 2017 as NASA's Associate Administrator for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs and rebuilt bipartisan Congressional support for the nation's space agency. Led efforts on 3 supportive authorization bills and many appropriations successes. Secured unanimous Senate confirmation of NASA's Deputy Administrator. Worked closely with NASA corporate partners.
From 1997 to 2009 led Congressional Affairs for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and secured strong Congressional backing for the nation's largest federal law enforcement agency. Previously managed appropriations issues for Representative Steny Hoyer and authored the legislation that created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Served for 24 years as a member and as treasurer of the board that honors firefighters killed in the line of duty. Now serves as a director of both the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Center for Campus Fire Safety.
