Steve Gortmaker, in his 2nd season as the Associate Director of Football Performance with the Florida State. He has been titled a Master Strength & Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association. Gortmaker came to Oregon after spending 2 years as the Associate Director of Athletic Performance at Oregon, South Florida and Southern Miss. The former Oklahoma Sooner defensive back, who also served as a strength & conditioning assistant, worked primarily with the football program. His 20-year journey through the coaching ranks included 4 years at Tennessee and 4 years at South Carolina and the 2000 National Championship at Oklahoma. While at Tennessee and South Carolina, Gortmaker served as the Associate Director of Football Strength & Conditioning. He served on staff with both Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley beginning in 2009 and joined the staff with Steve Spurrier in 2004, serving for 4 seasons. He came to South Carolina from Kansas, where he served as Assistant Director of Football Strength & Conditioning for 3 seasons with Mark Mangino during the 2002-04 seasons. From 2001-02, Gortmaker served as the Head Football Strength & Conditioning Coach for Jack Harbaugh at Western Kentucky University. There he was responsible for implementing, directing, and supervising the performance program for the Western football team as they advanced to the 2001 1AA Playoffs. Prior to joining the Western staff, Gortmaker served as a strength & conditioning coach at the University of Oklahoma from 1999-2001. Considered a well knowledgeable strength coach, Gortmaker was instrumental in preparing the 2000 National Championship & Big XII Championship team at OU. During his time on the Sooner staff, Gortmaker served as a volunteer/part-time assistant strength and conditioning coach at Oklahoma during the 1999 season where he worked with the men and women's gymnastics, golf, softball, baseball, track & field, basketball and football. He was elevated to football strength & conditioning with the Sooners in 2000. Gortmaker is a 1998 graduate of Oklahoma, where he earned a degree in Health & Sport Science. The White Deer, Texas, native played defensive back for OU from 1995-98 and earned Academic All-Big XII honors along with being a Sooner scholar-athlete. He is married to the former Brooke Martin of Irmo, South Carolina and has three children, Mikaela, Kanon and River.
