Shane M. Boasberg
Austin Divorce and Family Law Attorney
Shane M. Boasberg is an Austin divorce and family law attorney who has spent more than two decades helping Central Texas families navigate some of the most difficult moments in their lives. As the founder of SMB Law, PC, Shane focuses his practice on divorce, custody and visitation, property division, parental rights, and post-divorce modifications for clients in Travis, Williamson, and Hays Counties. His blend of trial experience, negotiation skill, and practical problem-solving allows him to handle everything from relatively straightforward agreed divorces to high-conflict, high-asset family law disputes.
Shane’s approach to family law is straightforward: protect the client, reduce unnecessary conflict, and stay relentlessly prepared for court. He is known for working creatively to resolve disputes through negotiation and mediation, and he has a strong track record of resolving many matters without ever having to file or answer a lawsuit—an important advantage for clients who want to preserve privacy, reduce stress, and control costs. When litigation is necessary, however, he brings the mindset of an experienced civil litigator to the courtroom, making sure his clients are fully prepared for hearings, temporary orders, and trial.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Shane moved to Texas to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he earned undergraduate degrees in Government and Business. He went on to earn his J.D. from South Texas College of Law Houston in 2002. Early in his career, Shane served as a legislative attorney for a Texas state senator, drafting bills, amendments, and legal opinions—experience that gave him a deep understanding of how laws affecting Texas families are written and interpreted. He later worked at the Texas Office of the Attorney General, representing the Texas Department of Transportation in complex contractual, construction, and engineering disputes and acting as a legislative liaison on issues including employment, environmental, and eminent domain law.
In 2010, Shane founded SMB Law, PC in Austin with a mission to provide accessible, high-quality legal representation to the citizens and families of Central Texas. While he has handled a wide range of civil cases over the years, his primary focus today is divorce and family law—particularly matters where financial complexity, business ownership, or serious parenting disputes make the stakes especially high. His broader background in civil litigation, business, real estate, and personal injury gives him an edge in divorces involving small businesses, real estate portfolios, complex compensation packages, or overlapping injury claims.
Family law clients turn to Shane for help with contested and uncontested divorces, child custody and possession schedules, child support, enforcement and modification actions, temporary restraining orders and other emergency relief, and protective measures in cases involving safety concerns. He frequently represents professionals, business owners, and families dealing with emotionally charged issues such as parental alienation or disputes over relocation and decision-making rights for children. In every case, he focuses on clear communication, realistic expectations, and long-term solutions that protect both his clients and their children.
Shane’s work in family law and civil litigation has earned recognition from both the legal community and independent rating organizations. He has been named an Elite Lawyer, with recognition continuing through at least 2025, and he was selected to Texas Monthly’s “Rising Stars” list in 2012 and again in 2014–2016—an honor bestowed on only a small percentage of Texas attorneys. Clients and fellow lawyers consistently describe him as a trusted, driven advocate with strong courtroom skills and a reputation for integrity, as reflected in numerous positive reviews and peer endorsements on platforms such as Avvo, Yelp, and other legal directories.
Professionally, Shane is licensed to practice in Texas and is actively involved in the legal community, including membership in the State Bar of Texas, the Austin Bar Association, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, and the Capital Area Trial Lawyers Association. These affiliations reflect his commitment to staying current on developments in Texas family law and broader civil litigation trends that can affect his clients’ cases.
Above all, Shane understands that no one comes to a divorce or custody lawyer on their best day. He is known for being accessible, candid, and grounded—walking clients step-by-step through the process, explaining their options in plain English, and offering strategic advice tailored to their goals and family dynamics. Whether negotiating a settlement at the conference table or advocating in a Travis, Williamson, or Hays County courtroom, he brings the same focus: protect what matters most and help clients move forward with confidence.
