I began my study of Japanese language and culture as a youth in Southern California in the latter half of the 1980, during the so-called ‘Japan Boom’. At the same time that American society was becoming interested in Japanese culture, American industry was realizing that they were being surpassed by their Japanese counterparts in many areas, especially the linguistic front.

After graduating university with a degree in Japanese language and literature, I immediately began working as a freelance document translator in New York City, in and around working in the Japanese movie and TV industry, and a brief stint as a sushi apprentice.

Expanding on my background in computers, I have excelled in technical document translation, particularly in the area of patents. Completing large volumes of work in areas as exacting as nuclear controller specifications, I have also excelled at document translation in the financial and legal areas. In light of recent advances in life sciences which continue to emerge from Japan, I have taken up a fresh self-directed bilingual study of medical science in my spare time.

私は1980年代後半のいわゆる「日本ブーム」の中、南カリフォルニアに住んでいた頃、若者として日本の言語と文化の学びを始めた。アメリカの社会が日本の文化に興味を持ち始めたと同時に、アメリカの産企業は特に言語学の領域では日本の相手に勝られるということに気付いた。

日本語日本文学の学士号を取得して卒業した後、直ちにニューヨーク市で書類の翻訳者として働き始めた。そこの映画業界・テレビ業界にも勤めたし、短期だけでお寿司屋の見習いとしてもも働いた。コンピューター業界の背景を拡大して、技術翻訳に優れたことがあり、特に特許の分野で達成したとも言われた。

原子力の制御器明細書ほど面白い分野でも多量の翻訳を完了して、金融分野や法的領域に優れたとも言える。日本から出つつある生命科学における最近の進歩を踏まえて、暇なときには、 私にとって新しい 二言語の医学の自主学習を始めた。
