Shannon Egan
I work as a Content Writer for Oozle Media, an Internet Marketing Firm in Sandy, Utah.
Previously, I worked in Khartoum and Darfur as a freelance journalist and have had over 50 articles published for various national and international organizations, including UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIFEM and IRIN-OCHA. In 2005, I was contracted by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) to travel to Darfur to interview UN agencies, NGOs and displaced women on the issue of gender-based violence, and also to highlight a UNFPA concert held in El-Fashar in honor of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women.
In 2006, I attended the 6th African Union Summit and the Arab League Summit, both held in Khartoum, and was able to interview senior politicians on a variety of issues some of them of a sensitive nature for various media sources, including IRIN-OCHA.
Also, I worked for two years as an assistant editor and writer for Al Bab Magazine and for Sudan’s only private English language Newspaper, Khartoum Monitor. Aside from editing, my writing focus for both these publications was to highlight political and humanitarian issues affecting populations in Sudan, and also the projects of UN agencies, NGOs and INGOs working to assist those in need.
In 2007, I entered into a three year contract with Fifi Oscard, a renowned literary agency that has been part of the agency business for over 50 years. Since then I’ve been working with literary agent, Carolyn French, to develop a book based on my experiences working as a freelance journalist and teacher in Khartoum, Sudan in 2004 to 2006.
In November 2007, I began working for the UNFPA at headquarters in NYC as a Media Focal Point for the Humanitarian Response Branch. In 2008, I traveled on mission to Suva, Fiji with UNFPA’s Humanitarian Response Branch to interview the Fijian Police Force, UN agencies, and NGOs on the issue of domestic violence in order to write various feature stories for UNFPA’s global web, UNFPA’s Humanitarian Response Newsletter, and Relief Web.
