Ibrahim was pointing to recent statistics on motorcycle related injuries in Malaysia and how helmet use and safe motorcycle riding practices for adults and children can help lower the statistics and prevent road traffic injuries.
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Malaysia has published a study on motorcycle safety and Children in Kuala Lumpur and the whole country. The study recommended further safety education among motorcycling parents, and at the same time legislation that would further protect children in the pillion. International Motorcycling Foundation
“There is a pressing need to educate parents and adults alike on the urgent undertaking of child safety whilst in vehicles. A possible review of the Malaysian law pertaining suitability of children riding pillion with a set age limit of should be carried out for the benefit of this vulnerable group. Another review should be undertaken with a view of mandating the use of child seats whilst ensuring the child seats are affordable to the masses. The usage of child safety systems can be potential tool for mitigating the ever increasing number of child road traffic accidents with the appropriate support utilizing educational, research and legislative efforts.”

SMHAM says it is important for parents to be aware of the safety considerations when riding with children. Foremost of which is to never take a child for a motorcycle ride if his feet has yet to reach the foot rest. Reaching the foot rest means they somehow have the stability to be in the motorcycle and at the same time their feet would not have to dangle and get to motorcycle parts that could scald their skin.
