Shaun McGurgan

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Over 30 years of working with young people has provided me with deep insights into human development and instilled a passion for protecting the culture of childhood. Indeed, I firmly believe that the first step to building a positive relationship is to understand the culture of the person or people I am working with. I find myself constantly asking - what is the culture of childhood?

My commitment to developing and sharing child-centered, holistic education has led me to transform teaching into an art form. My art uses the lore of children to deliver high quality academic outcomes whilst ensuring that the childhood of each individual is positively affirmed.

Over the course of my professional development, I have realised that the single most important aspect of being both a teacher and mentor is the human relationships which I form. This realisation has been, and continues to be, explored in my current position as Curriculum Manager at Bali's Green School. My role within the School further reveals my true passion and mission in life - mentoring schools and individual teachers towards a child-centered and holistic approach to learning.

The skills and interests which I practice and pursue are reflective of my holistic approach to education - I am an experienced story teller, singer of children's songs, musician (recorder, didgeridoo), folk dancer, juggler, teacher of literacy and numeracy, visual artist (water colour, crayon and pencil), traditional children's games facilitator, horticulturalist and team builder.

A compassionate and heart-focussed educational system can change the world. I am committed to bringing this type of schooling to everyone.
