I was born into the bicycling world. My father started working at bike shops before I was born. While I was still in diapers he apprenticed with the famous American frame-builder Albert Eisentraut and began building frames under his own name. Later he would be a successful designer and product manager for companies such as Ross, Fisher, and Alpinestars.
I grew up surrounded by bikes and bicycle culture. I rode my first hundred mile day on the back of a tandem with a kid-back conversion before I was five. As a child it did not even occur to me that you could take a holiday without loading camping gear and setting out on a tandem, or later a triple- with my baby sister in tow in a trailer. I did my first bike race at six and got my first industry job doing odds and ends at Fisher at fifteen. Over the years I've ridden thousands of miles on the back of a tandem, road raced, time-trialed, randonneured, mountain biked, and more.
My first serious bike industry job was working for the family business importing frames from Taiwan and doing consulting work helping various Taiwanese firms with new product development and marketing in the U.S. market. I did consulting for Taiwan based companies on my own for a few years with a focus on sales, running warranty, and warehousing product for sale to various U.S. customers. In 1996 I went back to work for the family business, this time building and designing one-off, high-end custom frames. I did that for about five years and then decided to go back to school and get my degree. While attending school I worked summers at a bike shop doing sales and precision bike fittings. In 2008 I went to work doing bike retail full time- as sales manager and clothing, accessories, and fill buyer for a shop with annual gross sales around a million US dollars.
When I was in my mid-teens our family lived in Taiwan. I have been back a few times since and have always really enjoyed the scenery, culture, and the people. My fiancee is American born Chinese and she is interested in teaching English in Asia, which she has done in the past. Based on that, my professional background, and love of Taiwan, it seems that the time is right to pursue employment working with the Taiwan bike industry.
