I've recently returned from a year as Community Health M&E; Adviser for the Kuru Family or Organizations in rural Botswana, where I led monitoring and evaluation for program development and managed monthly and quarterly reporting for national and international donors (The Global Fund, Botswana Ministry of Health, Sida, etc.). While implementing health promotion interventions and advocating for increased access to health services among rural area groups (namely the San Bushmen of the Kalahari), I built and managed partnerships with community health promoters, local and district service providers, NGO partners working in multiple sectors (including health, education, agriculture, livelihoods and income-generation), and government and policymakers. I also assisted with the planning, implementation and facilitation of Community TB Care for local treatment supporters and health workers based on new guidelines from the Botswana National TB Program. Key topics in the comprehensive training included TB prevention and treatment, home-based care, contact tracing, the relationship between HIV and TB, voluntary HIV testing and counseling—all of which was adapted, translated and facilitated for a multiplicity of age, ethnic and language groups across two districts.
