I do health research in developing countries and find stories with photos are the best way to share what goes on the ground. I used to have a small box kodak and used whatever my parents had lying around and remember asking friends if I could do black and white portraits, then bought a minolta at university went on a 6month trip to India only to have the photo processing shop damaged all my film! I am happy the world has gone digital as now my visits to Spain, Argentina, Nepal and Turkey allowed me to capture a bit of the world with my small eye(s)!
