Medellin, Colombia, my home away from home, is a beautiful city that I have the privilege to visit every summer. I visit my mother's family and have the opportunity to travel throughout the country. It is a very innovative and modern city. I enjoy a different pace of life where I am able to walk to the store and eat authentic Colombian food everyday. Each year, my Spanish improves tremendously and makes me feel more confident while in a foreign country. However, Colombia isn't as perfect as some tourists make it out to be. In the town of Cucuta, where my extended family lives, the lifestyle is completely different from what I'm used to. There is no hot water, air conditioning, and the majority of the population is very poor. The trips make me socially aware of how life is like outside of a first world country. It is experiences like these that make me want to travel the world and learn new cultures and languages. My most memorable experience in Colombia was having my quince surrounded by my extended family that doesn't live in Georgia. I felt uplifted knowing that I had a big support system that existed throughout the world. I hope that in the future that I can continue to travel in Colombia and throughout South America and the world.
