In 1991, Austin Energy started the Austin Green Building Program (and coined the term green building), beginning the development for a model of construction that has been emulated all over the United States. Defining green building is not easy, it can encompass many different meanings. Austin Energy’s primary focus in developing the program was to reduce the usage and cost of electrical energy in residential and commercial construction, but green building quickly evolved to encompass almost every aspect of construction. The following principles describe a comprehensive approach to building (and remodeling) green.
