Sianne Shepherd

sewing machinist, Costumier, and Volunteer in Leicestershire, UK

Hi

I'm Sianne (pronounced Sigh-Ann). I have been working as a sewing machinist in the small leather goods industry for roughly 12 years. I first started in the industry at Roma Leather Ltd and have more recently been working on a casual basis for Crown Northampton. I have worked on belts, bags & wallets among other small leather goods & accessories for designer and Highstreet brands.

I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Entertainment Design Crafts (Costume). Modules I covered included tailoring, millinery, replicating costumes and designing and making my own costumes.

I am currently doing some voluntary work with Harborough Theatre wardrobe department, helping source and dress the plays. I previously worked with Off-the-Fence Productions based in Leicester where I researched, designed, made and sourced costumes for several plays that also toured the UK.

Since childhood I've had an interest in history which has followed into adulthood, leading to volunteering at Leicestershire Museums Resource Centre during my holidays from Uni. I also studied A-Level history. I love exploring museums, historic houses etc and attending exhibitions particularly if they involve costumes or fashion.

I love crafting particularly dressmaking, cross stitching and crochet. Over the last couple of years I started selling some of my work at local craft fairs.

I have also discovered a passion for folk music and attend gigs and festivals as much as I can. I also love trying out new crafts at the festivals I attend.

I also love nature and try my best to help where I can to conserver green spaces and wildlife. I have been involved with citizen science projects such as the RSPB's Big Garden Bird Watch. I live in rural England and love walking through the woods or by the canals when the weather allows.

The photo to the right is of a costume I made being modeled by Alison Murphy; the photograph was taken by Mattias Carson.
