Sierra Domb
Visual Snow Initiative Founder, Global Health Innovator, and Medical Research Collaborator
Sierra Domb advanced global recognition, research, resource development, and scientific understanding of underrecognized medical conditions, particularly those involving complex neurological, autoimmune, and sensory components. Her innovative initiatives integrated cross-disciplinary methods and were grounded in science-driven strategies designed to address clinical and systemic gaps in care, with consideration for individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and health literacy levels. As a global research collaborator, her work was informed by academic and professional experience in health communication, intercultural communication, behavioral sciences, neuroscience, and qualitative data analysis. Her perspective was further shaped by lived experience with medical conditions, including Visual Snow Syndrome (which began in 2015), as well as Autoimmune Dysregulation and Erythromelalgia, both of which she has had since childhood.
As the Founder of the Visual Snow Initiative (VSI), Sierra Domb led efforts that resulted in groundbreaking progress for Visual Snow Syndrome (VSS), including its official clinical recognition and inclusion in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). She led the development of diagnostic criteria, launched a Global Directory of VSS Physicians, and established resources for patients and healthcare providers. Sierra also pioneered the first pediatric materials for VSS and secured international research funding across seven countries to investigate its biological basis, pathophysiology, and potential treatments. Through these initiatives, she reshaped how VSS is understood and managed worldwide.
Beyond VSI, Sierra served on the International Advisory Board for the Columbia-WHO Center for Global Mental Health, contributing to efforts to reduce health-related stigma and expand access to care in underserved regions. Sierra collaborated with the Oxford Mindfulness Foundation on the development of their app, creating a globally accessible module designed for individuals with VSS. She was a TEDx speaker, 2024 UMiami “30 Under 30” award, and a 2025 Extraordinary Latinas Award nominee for her advocacy work, creating resources, highlighting patient voices, and raising awareness of overlooked health topics.
Sierra’s background also spanned creative and media fields. She worked as a voice actor in Los Angeles, a writer and photographer whose work was published in The Miami Herald, and a DJ and radio show host. These collective experiences informed her ability to connect complex causes with diverse audiences and facilitate accessible communication.
“In a world that often promotes conformity, insecurity, self-serving systems, and appearances over substance, choosing to be yourself and focusing on what you contribute and how you treat others are important acts of rebellion. We cannot choose the health or appearance we are born with, nor how others will treat us, but how we respond shapes our character. Do not fear being different. Suffering is inevitable, but leaving it meaningless is optional. Amidst injustice or hardship, let your actions foster resilience, kindness, and the change you hope to create for yourself and others, knowing that as long as you try your best, that is enough.” - Sierra Domb
