Growing up in a German American family has its benefits. The biggest advantage is being able to experience many cultures and countries. These experiences teach me not only about other cultures but about myself as well.
My siblings and I grew up homeschooled for the purpose of having the freedom to travel and visit family whenever we wanted. As a German citizen, I can easily travel all over Europe allowing me to visit eleven countries in total. I was able to see some of the most beautiful places on earth such as the Swiss Alps, the Colosseum in Rome, and the channels in small French towns. By traveling to all these different countries, I know the importance of sharing and learning about other cultures.
My grandparents live in a beautiful, small, traditional, ski town in the Black Forest. When thinking of Germany, people often think about a town like this. There is a yodeling club, most of my friends there are in a dance group that performs all the traditional dances, in traditional gowns on holidays. In the summertime, cows roam the hillside, and, in the winter, we ski. I went to school there in elementary school. While I was there, I made some friends that I still have to this day.
The experiences and things I learned over there really help me connect with my friends, family, ancestors, and myself. History is made relevant and interesting. It allows me to branch out and leave my comfort zone. It shapes who I am, and I am eternally thankful for that.
