Simon Bainbridge
Editor, Writer, and Consultant in London
Hi! I am a writer and editor specialising in contemporary art and photography. I also run workshops for photographers, and work with individual artists as a consultant, collaborating and advising on long term projects and books, and helping them identify and communicate their unique profile. I also write essays for books and exhibitions.
I live in South London with my partner, two daughters and a whippet, and I am available to hire.
I am currently a photography correspondent for The Art Newspaper. I write for other titles too, and am always looking to expand my editorial portfolio. I also sometimes to picture research for book publishers, and I have more than 20 years experience as a senior editor.
Previously, I was Editor-in-Chief of British Journal of Photography, and Editorial Director of 1854 Media, during two decades in which I oversaw the transformation of the magazine, and introduced new initiatives such as Portrait of Britain (the UK’s largest public art project), the International Photography Award, and its annual talent issue, Ones To Watch. I later worked for Magnum Photos as Head of Content, and for universities in the UK and Europe.
My first book, Magnum Artists, was published by Laurence King in 2020, and I am the recipient of the RPS Award for Photography Publishing. I have curated three exhibitions, and I have been a juror and/or nominator for dozens of photography awards.
