It isn’t love that makes the world go round; it’s stories. Without stories we wouldn’t much care that the world was going round. But the instant we see ourselves part of a story about people clinging to a little blue-green rock hurtling through time and space, making our way along on this rock turn by turn, the world going round starts to matter. As I cling, I also teach, write, and tell too many stories. In part I do so because I can’t help myself, and in part it's because nothing moves us like good stories. If we’re going to solve the problems of the world around us, we’re going to have to tell better stories—stories in which we’re champions of those who need to be championed, servants of those who need to be served, caregivers of those who need care, and nut-jobs for those who need a good laugh. I’m tempted to try and tell you how I came to believe all this, but it’s a long story…
