Sonia Davis

Sonia Davis is the Coordinator of Homeless Education for Clayton County Public Schools. Under the guidance of federal programs, she ensures that homeless students are identified and served in compliance with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

In 1997, Sonia joined Clayton County Public Schools as the Homeless Liaison/Grant Facilitator. In that role, she quickly elevated to the level of state-recognition for excellence in providing school year and back-to-school support for the county’s homeless population. In 2005, she was promoted to Coordinator of Homeless Education.

Sonia’s diligent efforts to create, sustain and expand one of the most successful Homeless Education programs in Georgia makes her a sought out speaker and mentor for those running similar programs in the southeast. She uses her training and educational background to inform school administrators, staff, community agencies, and parents about the educational rights of homeless children and youth. Then, she turns that knowledge into tangible and meaningful programs that impact the children and families of . Some of her most notable programs have included:

  • Founding the Homework On-site Assistance and Enrichment Program (HOAEP) for local homeless shelters and group homes, including Rainbow House, , Securus House, ;
  • Hosting the annual back-to-school fair attended by hundreds;
  • Being a signature partner and beneficiary of the Ludacris Back to School Project;
  • Coordinating the Helping Hands Project (food and clothing resources for hurricane Katrina victims), serving more than 130 families;
  • Directing the annual holiday sponsorship program, soliciting more than 150 donors to provide support for more than 85 families each year;
