Sarah McNiven
Teacher in Oro, Oro-Medonte, ON, Canada
Hi, my name is Sarah McNiven and I’m an education student at Laurentian University. I have two sisters, who are both younger than me, and two dogs. I live on a farm, so most of my childhood was spent either in the barn with the cows, or in a field on a tractor. I’m from Oro-Medonte, which is a very small rural town just outside of Barrie, Ontario. In my spare time I enjoy watching hockey with my friends and family. We’re all Toronto Maple Leafs fans. I’ve been playing music since I was 3, and some of the instruments I can play include the violin, the flute, the saxophone, and the bagpipes.
I have wanted to be teacher for as long as I can remember, and it was when I was in grade five that I decided I wanted to teach French. I have always enjoyed being around kids, either watching my own younger sisters, or watching other kids from around the neighbourhood. In high school I took a peer leadership class that allowed me to be in a grade 9 applied French class, which really solidified that I was pursuing the correct profession for myself. Since being in university, I have spent much of my free time volunteering with one of my past French teachers, which has been another incredible experience that has taught me a great deal about the teaching profession.
