Krista Loy

Knoxville, Tennessee, United States

I was born unique. I had crossed fused renal ectopia to the left meaning that both of my kidneys were on the same side. One of the many multiple rare conditions that would eventually plague me in my older years.

I apparently have a very active and inappropriate immune system. My first autoimmune disease was eczema as a child, followed by psoariasis in my teen years. As an adult I developed asthma and had always had severe allergies since my teens.

When I reached my mid to late 20's my gallbladder died due to my own immune system as did the sphincter at the end of my stomach. My asthma worsened and I started developing food allergies.

When I hit my late 30's early forties, I had an asthma attack so severe it nearly killed me. Then at the age of 42 post an odd virus three days prior, I started having symptoms of a neruological disease. After switching to a new neurologist, I was found to have Neuromyelitis Optica a very rare inflammatory autoimmune disease of the nervous system.

I now walk with a cane or a rollator. I have upper and lower body weakness and as time passed now at the age of 44 I have also been found to have Brown-Sequard Syndrome which is even more rare than NMOSD. I may be facing extensive spinal cord and spine surgery through the Vanderbilt Spine Center. I am on a weird roller coaster where my immune system is the enemy.
