Smriti has made a career out of talking to strangers. Over the course of nearly a decade as a senior feature writer for The Sunday Times in Sri Lanka, she's met many extraordinary people, a number of whom were writers.

She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, English Literature and Psychology, a Master’s Degree in English Literature and a diploma in Peace and Development Reporting.

Smriti was the managing editor of the trilingual children’s magazine ‘Yuti’. She is a contributor to the London based Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) and her articles have also appeared in The Hindu, Mint, Times of India (Crest Edition), Leisure Times magazine, Gourmet Circle and in Travel SriLanka.

She has designed and taught modules around social media/feature writing for the Institute of Policy Studies, the Women and Media Collective and the Sri Lanka Press Institute.

In 2013, she was awarded the Upali Wijewardena Best Feature Writer of the Year by the Editors Guild of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Press Institute.

She is also currently the User Engagement Coordinator for SciDev.Net's South Asian edition and manages their social media and marketing activities in the region.

She has moderated sessions for the British Council, ColomboScope, the Galle Literary Festival and the Colombo Art Biennale, among others. In 2012 she was one of five authors based in Sri Lanka commissioned to write a piece for the British Council’s ‘Dickens 2012 microwebsite.’ She made her film debut in Oscar winning director Gerardine Wurzburg’s documentary Wretches and Jabberers, for which she interviewed two autistic men on a road trip around the world.
