Sofia Quintanilla

Melbourne, Australia.

Innovation, creativity and diversity are just some words to describe emerging industrial designer Sofia Quintanilla, a 2013 RMIT University graduate. With a passion for product design Sofia strives to design products that enhance
the user experience, as well as designing for people with special needs.

Sofia’s interest in design started whist living in South America between 1995-2004. Exposed to the conditions where people have 3rd world problems and are faced everyday with little to no solutions.

In 2012 Sofia opened a pop-up stall at the Queen Victoria market in Melbourne called “I love Recycle” Located in the ‘Stringbean local artisans’ Section.Exploring one of handcrafted products such as lamps and accessories from raw materials to up- cycle them for further use. Sofia was able to educate people on how everyday trash can be valued and re-used with a splash of creativity and a dash of ingenuity.

Being involved in real world studios with Companies such “Charlwood Design” & “Chijo+Co Design” whist doing her bachelor course, Sofia developed an eye for detail and refined her skills to produce high quality finishes on her designs including both aesthetics and purpose. In 2013 Sofia assisted Kanvar Nayer Industrial Design PHD Candidate, on concept development, CAD modelling and Initial rendering.

Throughout the industrial Design course Sofia worked with different types of products some focusing on form and aesthetics and others looking into best solutions for current issues using design thinking. In this development a hands on process was necessary embracing rapid prototype and new manufacturing techniques and methods while using a trial-error method to solve issues. Sofia aspires to help not only those with great needs but also solving everyday issues with emphatic designs and a clear sense of direction
towards user experience.
