Sofia Minson

From my studio in Auckland, New Zealand, I create soulful, finely detailed portrait, landscape and surreal oil paintings. My inspiration comes from the land, myths and people of Aotearoa (NZ) and the unity I see amongst richly diverse cultures from around the world. Born in Auckland in 1984, I spent much of my childhood in Samoa, Sri Lanka and China due to my father's civil engineering work. On returning to New Zealand as a teenager I discovered my sister's 10-year-old discarded set of deliciously blendable oil paints. My love affair with this medium began. Painting enabled me to reconnect with my homeland, my Ngati Porou Maori, Swedish and Irish heritage and all that I had experienced overseas. For seven years my works have been exhibited and collected in the USA, Europe and throughout New Zealand. I have won three national art awards, been a two-time finalist in the Adam Portraiture Awards and graduated with an Art and Design degree.
