Sonia Joseph
computer scientist, AI researcher, and Businesswoman in United States of America
Sonia Josephis an American computer scientist and businesswoman specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) research, with a focus on multimodal models, interpretability, and AI ethics. She is a Ph.D. student at the Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, affiliated with McGill University, and has contributed to various interdisciplinary projects bridging neuroscience and machine learning.
Early life and education
Joseph was born in Concord, Massachusetts. She completed her undergraduate studies at Princeton University in 2019, concentrating in computational neuroscience and earning certificates in computer science and creative writing. Her senior thesis explored natural language processing models for semantic representation in the human brain, developed in collaboration with the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and Google.
She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at McGill University under the supervision of Blake Richards at Mila, focusing on deep learning, machine learning theory, and multimodal learning.
Career
Prior to her doctoral studies, Joseph worked on deep learning models applied to neural data at the Janelia Research Campus and served as a machine learning and natural language processing consultant for startups in the San Francisco Bay Area.
She co-founded Alexandria, an internet publishing house that builds infrastructure for web3 books, aiming to explore new paradigms in digital publishing.
Joseph is also a member of South Park Commons, a community of technologists and entrepreneurs, where she engages in discussions on AI development and ethics.
Research and contributions
At Mila, Joseph's research centers on multimodal interpretability and alignment in AI systems. She has contributed to projects that analyze vision and multimodal mechanistic interpretability, collaborating with researchers to explore how AI models process and represent information across different modalities.
Her interdisciplinary approach combines insights from neuroscience and machine learning to advance understanding in AI systems, particularly in areas related to AI alignment and ethics.
Public engagement
Joseph has been featured in various interviews and podcasts discussing AI alignment, risks, and ethics. Notably, she appeared on the Pioneer Park podcast to share her perspectives on building responsible AI communities.
