Haku, I am a Chumash, Tongva, Yaqui, Zapotec, Irish, California Indian Practitioner and have been involved in Traditional Crafts, Arts and Weaving for over twenty years.
I work in many mediums: Baskets and Jewelry (Tule and Kelp); Sculpting (Recycled cable and bags), and; Imagery (Paint, Photography).
I am a member of the California Indian Basket Weavers Association and founded the Indigenous Youth Foundation Inc., who's purpose is to gather, teach and persevere cultural/environmental education/arts. We self-published the Children’s Book, The Beginning of the Chumash andpresent in schools, elementary to University level.
For several years I have been teaching myself the ancient Chumash Seagrass and Kelp weaving techniques. Ocean treasures of Seaweed, Kelp, shells, rocks and drift woods provide an array of vibrant colors, shapes, sizes and flexibilities to create. My works have been exhibited in the traveling exhibition “Connections” and for sale at the Maidu Indian Museum in Roseville and ANIMA California in Carmel By the Sea, along with local crafts fairs. In 2018 I was an Art Fellow at the Institute for American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe.
All of my work is based on environmental concepts of utilizing and adapting to your environment by using only what is available and increasing awareness and responsibility of the effect you make on our Mother Earth.
