Sonya Renee
Sonya Renee is easily one of the most distinguished, accomplished and recognizable females in the world of Performance Poetry. Sonya became the National Individual Poetry Slam Champion less than a year after attending her first open mic in 2004. She has been a top ten finalist on every competitive performance poetry stage she has touched since then, including taking the champion title at the Four Continents International Slam Championship in the United Kingdom in 2006. On stages across the globe, including New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland, Sweden, and the Netherlands, Sonya continues to embody the words she pens through action; having performed in front of over 1 million spectators on the Washington D.C National Mall alongside Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton at the historic March for Women’s Lives. Her poetry has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies including Off Our Backs and Spokenword Revolution Redux and been seen on HBO, BET, MTV, CNN, and the Oxygen Network. Sonya continues tour globally and has just released her first collection of poetry, A Little Truth on Your Shirt published by GirlChild Press. She is the founder of the international self esteem and empowerment movement, The Body Is Not an Apology.
