At age 47 after working for a company for 12 years, I found myself unemployed like so many other people. A couple of days before my birthday while battling a kidney stone, I decided to give myself a goal and a timeline to establish a company and have it up and running (and be somewhat profitable). Because of my fashion background (in design, manufacturing, construction and development) and with my industry contacts, I knew I had a solid foundation of knowledge to start my own project. When I was asked to get involved with my kid’s school fundraising committee, it dawned on me… why not create something different and new to raise money for the school. Obviously, there were the typical and boring logoed T-shirts, pens, cups and mugs. I knew the minimum orders would be too high, the product would be cheaply made and the cost of shipping would be through the roof. This was not going to fly, knowing my financial situation and other families with similar circumstances. Parents will spend their hard-earned cash, but need to get something of value, even if it is for a school fundraiser. It was then that I came up with an old idea with a new spin. Flip flops. Yes, you heard it right... Flip flops. An old fashion statement that's been around for so many years, all around the world… but I gave it a twist! I had my work cut out for me. Not having any employees, any start-up funds or any professional help and knowing I would be competing against larger companies that have been established for many years…. this would be challenging at the very least. It's been about a year and a half now, and yes it's been a struggle but with the support from my family and special friends who have helped me through this journey, who have given me great ideas and comments (some positive, some negative, but I have listened to all of them), I have learned a lot along the way.
