What We Do

S.O.U.P. (Society Of Unified Poets)We will form or contribute to the formation of Poetry Slam Teams in local communities to participate in National, Regional, and Local Competitions. S.O.UP. is also an educational initiative that combines creating the highest quality art/poetry/music and the telling of each persons unique story, to enhance the internalization of knowledge. We operate within and along side the Principles of Pan-Africanism. With an Emphasis on Culture, we encourage the participants confidence with continual affirmation.

S.O.U.P. facilitates a functional understanding of literacy and art while exceeding achievement goals set forth by K.E.R.A.(Kentucky Educational Reform Act)

FIVE ELEMENTS OF THE S.O.U.P. SOCIETY OF UNIFIED POETS CHAPTER PLAN

Our structure encourages an Active understanding of the knowledge and culture of the S.O.U.P. There are five main areas in which the organization works to improve the current social conditions. In order to be considered an official chapter of the S.O.U.P. Society Of Unified Poets, chapters must organize activities that hit at least 3 of the 5 areas:

A) Knowledge of Culture/Education: This area focuses on 1) self-education and 2) the education of the youth. Self-education pertains to knowledge of culture, knowledge of current events and issues, knowledge of self, etc. The following examples fall under the education of the youth. As many services within the public educational system become privatized, more and more institutions are looking to independent contractors for program design and execution. The application and addition of Urban Arts into youth centers and community events is indirectly influencing the education system. . S.O.U.P. Society Of Unified Poets also is constantly looking to develop, and work with those developing, experimental and pedagogically proven methods of using Poetry / Hip Hop/ Art as a motivational and academic tool.

This could be: mentoring programs, classes on Poetry / Hip Hop-related topics such as media literacy and Poetry / Hip Hop history, Poetry / Hip Hop awareness festivals, film screenings, or interactive element workshops.
