The most significant idea that has ‘resurfaced’ for me is the importance of getting to know the students. Making those connections can have a huge impact on the teacher/student relationship, which in turn builds trust and promotes risk taking. I say ‘resurface’, because this is not a new way of thinking for me. I have taken the time to focus on this of late, especially with my students with special needs. We are modelling the kinds of behaviours and attitudes that we want to see in our classrooms and in our schools. Respectful conversations are occurring that demonstrate a commitment to our students, a commitment to ongoing learning and a solid understanding of our profession.
