Spencer Trerice has a strong background in French Education that dates his self-designed French Club page of his grade 5 Elementary School Yearbook. A graduate of the University of Victoria, Spencer holds a B.A. (Honours) Degree in French and a M.A. in French Language, Literature and Culture. Furthermore, he has a Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française (DALF) C2 from le ministère de l’éducation nationale de la France. He is passionate about French varieties in Canada and how they shape the identity of French speakers in a minority setting and has an interest in didactics that spans over 20 years. As a specialist of linguistic representations of Acadian French speakers who speak Chiac, the vernacular of Moncton, N.B. in French Canadian Literature, Spencer seeks to inform on the relationship between identity and language and the importance of language rights of francophones living in a predominantly English environment.

He works as a Teacher Assistant for the Fran 100 level courses and has also worked as a Research Assistant on a project involving the investigation of texts dating from the early 1800’s to isolate the gradual loss of the emphatic use of “voir” (to see), retained by Acadian speakers, and when “donc” (therefore) took its place as we see in Standard French today. Spencer is currently a Teacher Candidate in Uvic’s Secondary PDPP 2016 intake and is qualified for FSL and French Immersion teaching.

In his spare time, Spencer enjoys watching live theatre and practicing his technique in painting. He has a passion for food, cooking, and good conversation. He is an avid cat lover and has rescued three orphan cats to date. Spencer is currently working on building a professional rapport with educators in his field and actively attends workshops aimed at enriching student learning and autonomy with the goal of helping students become life long learners of French..
