Shane'a Thomas
Arlington, Virginia, United States
For more than seven years, Shane’a Thomas, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Professor at University of Southern California's School of Social Work, has provided staff development and support within education and social service settings, speaking to groups about the effect of privilege when working with adolescents, self-care for educators and mental health professionals, sex and sexuality, race, class and oppression. Educating and training is a thrill, speaking at past institutions including Virginia State University, Visions of Feminism’s 2012 Conference at American University and at the Brown Girls’ Collective at Gallaudet University in February 2013 around similar subjects and more! Shane'a always has a unique twist using the wonders of pop culture, connecting common subjects in unique ways. Shows like Game of Thrones, Basketball Wives, and Kanye West can easily turn drab lessons into moments of "a-ha" and self-awareness.
The goal: To shape, educate and train people, not only as competent social workers and service providers, but as self-aware humans who are committed to their communities, their families, and ultimately, themselves.
