My name is Evan.
I am currently a student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I am studying Finance in the Isenberg School of Business while competing in NCAA Division 1 Ice Hockey for the UMass Minutemen.
I am passionate about the sport of hockey. Hockey has been the driving force behind all of my goals, aspirations and life decisions for as long as I can remember. Hockey brought me 2589 (Approximately) miles to Amherst from my hometown of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and countless more miles around the world beforehand.
I grew up in Canada, where it seems to be second nature for people to play and love the sport of hockey. From a young age I enjoyed the game immensely, it started out as a "fun" sport along with a variety of others I played growing up. While the fun always remained in all the sports I played, the difference between those sports and hockey however, is hockey became so much more than just "fun."
Hockey began as a hobby, turned into a passion and grew into a love. The couple times a week game and practice schedule, turned into a full time job with a 365 day a year commitment of workouts, practices, games, and travel. It transformed my goals on a year to year basis, centered on the team I strived to make each season. Some teams I made, and some I didn't. While the teams I made rewarded hard work, the teams I was left off of taught me the more valuable lessons. Never give up, persevere, and most importantly, it's not the end of the world.
For me the sport of hockey is more than just a passion, it's my identity. It's created my character and personality. Its invented my work ethic, teamwork skills, leadership abilities and much more. It's taught me of my strengths, shortcomings, how far I can push myself and what it takes to succeed, not only in sport, but in life as well. It shows me when I am slacking off, it never lies, and it never fails to motivate me. That's why to me hockey is more than just a sport, or a game, or a pasttime. It's who I am.
Although hockey has been so many things for me, I know one day my time playing the game competetively will come to an end. I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish, thankful for all the incredible help and support I've received, and have no regrets in following this path that brought me to here. I know that the things I have learned on this path will help me to passionately pursue whatever my future has to offer.
