Stephen Cheatham
Engineer in Tampa, Florida
I grew up in northern Florida, and a lot of who I am today comes from that environment. I spent most of my time outdoors, figuring things out with my hands—taking apart small engines, helping people fix things, and paying attention to how the land and weather affected everything around me. That curiosity stuck early.
Over time, I became especially interested in how structures hold up under pressure. Not just how they’re built, but how they perform years down the line. That’s what led me into engineering, focusing on structural systems and environmental factors.
Early in my career, I worked on large coastal development projects. That experience taught me a lot, but it also showed me how often long-term risks get overlooked in favor of speed or cost. That didn’t sit right with me.
So I shifted into consulting. Now I work more closely with property owners and developers, helping them think through risk before problems show up. I’m not there to sell anything—I’m there to help people see what they might be missing.
I tend to keep things simple. Pay attention, ask the right questions, and plan ahead. That’s really what my work—and my mindset—is built on.
