Stephen Pettet-Smith

Artist in Exeter, United Kingdom

I have been involved in art in public places since the 80s. I worked with Cardiff Bay Arts Trust, after leading the arts, craft and design programme of Britain’s 1992 National Garden Festival, before that I developed a pioneering Sculpture in Landscape project in South Wales. Originally I started work in engineering at one of Britain’s last iron foundries, before gaining a degree in Fine Art and a subsequent post graduate qualification in teaching. I retain a good understanding of the 'nut & bolts' of how things work both in the practical and conceptual sense!

My work links creativity with communities. This is seen in my work developing Arts and Health projects, principally within the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospitals, and in other spaces to create enhanced healing places. I advise the Kings Fund/Department of Health 'Enhancing the Healing Environment' local programme of projects. I also advise the University of Exeter MA Applied Drama programme on its health strand. Working with Fluid Architects, I was part of one of six short listed teams for the Design Council competition to redesign A&E Departments for the National Health Service.

I have focused on health environments for a time - but am interested in engaging in situations where creativity can enhance the way we live, work and play. Appointed Hon Research Fellow, University of Exeter, 2013.

I am always keen to develop projects and I am happy to discuss potential schemes, imaginings and ideas!
