Stephen S. Solomon
Dr. Stephen S. Solomon, an established optometrist in practice for more than forty years, is the Chief Executive Manager of Visibility in Motion, LLC, a research and consulting firm in Owego, New York, that specializes in human vision and its relationship to accident avoidance. Founded in 2007, the company is an outgrowth of several decades of Dr. Solomon's research.
A graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, Dr. Stephen S. Solomon taught chemistry at the institution. He went on to serve in the US Air Force as a First Lieutenant with the 363rd Tactical Hospital, based at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. Upon leaving the military, Dr. Solomon joined a private optometry practice in Owego and stayed on from 1968 until 2007.
Stephen S. Solomon is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Visual Development. He work is widely published, both in refereed journals and in firefighter and EMT journals. Dr. Solomon and James G. King co-authored an important article titled "The Influence of Color on Fire Vehicle Accidents," published in the Journal of Safety Research. In this article, the authors analyzed data on pumper trucks and showed that despite the prevalence of red fire trucks, vehicles that are lime-yellow and white are markedly safer than traditional red or red and white fire trucks. Their detailed statistical analysis is paired with an elegant yet simple review of the scientific research on visibility and color, which has found that humans are more sensitive to greenish-yellow and yellow than to red, in both bright and low light.
The value of Stephen S. Solomon's research and practice has been recognized by his colleagues and community; he received both the New York State Optometrist of the Year award in 1976 and Distinguished Achievement Award from the New York State Optometric Association in 1996.
